Secret Slickrock – Best Views in Sedona, AZ

Zach Rohe a professional photographer in Sedona, Arizona takes a photo in front of Cathedral Rock off the secret slickrock trail.

Why go to Secret Slickrock? Is this the best view of Cathedral Rock?

In my opinion this IS the best view of Cathedral Rock and this vantage point allows you to get several different views of Sedona’s most iconic rock formation. This is also a great location to spot wildflowers, some of the best sunrises and sunsets, and there are spots where reflective water spots collect after a rain or snow. It’s off the beaten path and not as crowded as other Sedona viewpoints.

What & Where is Secret Slickrock?

Located in West Sedona, it is an open plateau about the size of a football field with up close views of Cathedral Rock and other Sedona landmarks. A trail leads there from a small, unknown parking lot or you can access the area from Crescent Moon Ranch.

Where do you park for the Secret Slickrock Trailhead?

The easiest access is from the trail head parking lot, which is located here, and can be accessed anytime and without a pass. You can also get there from several trails out of Crescent Moon Ranch but this area has a fee to access and is open dawn to dusk seasonally. Check here for details and hours.

Directions to Secret Slickrock parking

How long is Secret Slickrock trail?

The trail from the trail head parking lot is a little over 0.3 miles with about 75 feet of elevation game. It’s an easy trail but does have a short section that is best described as a rocky staircase and requires decent footing.

How to get the best photos in this area?

Capturing the best light and views

Sunrise and sunset are the best times to capture the beauty of this location. While the slickrock area is the most popular, and has plenty of room to spread out, some of the best views are at the parking area and on the trail to the popular vista. Use of off camera lighting and wider lenses showcases you in front of the dramatic Sedona backdrops.

Is Secret Slickrock a good place to get married or elope?

It’s a great place for both as long as your ceremony is small. A permit is needed for groups over 70 people but I suggest keeping groups even smaller and special care is taken to leave no trace in the National Forest. Regulations can be found here.

While there is a lot of space in this area, with spots for very intimate weddings and space for larger groups, it can get busy as this is a popular place for other groups as well. Be sure to be courteous and share our public lands and take care to leave no trace.

Is Secret Slickrock a good place to hike?

The trail is short but plenty eventful along it’s length. Moe importantly, it is a good spur for other trails in the area and allows access to some of the best areas in all of Sedona like Crescent Moon Ranch and Airport Mesa. Both of these areas have a multitude of trails for unlimited hiking possibilities.

Other attractions near here

As mentioned earlier, Crescent Moon Ranch and Oak Creek is a stone’s throw away. While Cathedral Rock is geographically very close, it is very difficult to get to due to the creek crossing. Airport Mesa, Carroll Canyon, and Lovers Knoll are all nearby and offer a variety of views, hiking trails, wildflowers, and even some nearby secret Native American ruins.

Why you should visit Secret Slickrock

This truly is the best view of iconic Cathedral Rock and the vista offers several viewing angles of Sedona’s most popular rock. Depending on the season, you will also find wildflowers, wildlife, and the classic reflective puddles on the slickrock plateau.
Add to that the ease of access and “secrecy” of the location along with a variety of different views from the parking lot and along the trail.
Finally, there are plenty of other adventures nearby to be experienced and it is one of the most photogenic areas of Sedona with different looks for every season. Be sure to pack some water, leave no trace, get some photos, and I hope to see you on the trail!

Courthouse Vista & Baby Bell – Best Views in Sedona

Where is Courthouse Vista & Baby Bell?

Located in a central location

The parking area for Courthouse Vista is located off of Rt 179 in between Sedona and the Village of Oak Creek. This corridor features views and access to all of the great iconic sandstone formations that Sedona is known for.

Directions to Courthouse Vista

The trail to Baby Bell rock

Coming out of the trail head, you make a left on the Phone Trail and walk about .35 miles until the trail opens up and you see the Baby Bell rock formation on your left. From here several side trails lead to a plateau with expansive views. A short scramble up a gully lead to the summit which is only about 10 feet in diameter.

Description of Baby Bell Trail

Why go to Courthouse Vista & Baby Bell?

A great location with ease of access

Trails in this area lead to several different rock formations and vista points, including some of the classics of the area. It is right across from Yavapai Vista and if the parking is full here, that lot can be used as a backup.  Most of the hikes are short and parking and traffic is only moderately busy in this area.

Is Bell Rock or Cathedral Rock Better?

Why choose? The great thing about climbing the Baby Bell rock is that you get 360 degree views and it’s the only place where you get great views of Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, Courthouse Butte and many more. This location truly lies in the heart of Sedona’s red rock formations and offers the best views in Sedona.

How to get the best photos in this area?

Capturing the best light and views

The best time for photos at Courthouse Vista is definitely sunset, but sunrise can be good as well. Because of the huge formations and bold colors, I suggest having the option to use wider lenses and have off camera lighting to bring out the best colors of the Sedona backdrop and still feature the subject as the focal point.

Best Views in Sedona of all the classic landmarks

This area truly is in the heart of Sedona and one of the few spots with 360 degree views and also great vantage points to see Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, and Courthouse Butte. Numerous photo opportunities are in the area for a professional photo shoot or to capture your own beautiful landscape or night photos.

Access to several trails with room to explore

The central location lies in a crisscross of many trails and enables hiking to Bell Rock and around Courthouse Butte. Side trails to other rock formations and numerous scrambles allow exploration and solitude. As always, be sure to pack plenty of water and leave no trace and I hope to see you on the trail!

Yavapai Vista – Best views in Sedona

What makes Yavapai Vista Special?

Drum Circles and Vortex Energy

The big flat part of Yavapai Vista is the location of the famous full moon drum circles, and there is an ecstatic dance session here every Tuesday.  When you come here you can feel the Native American history and powerful vortex energy this area exudes.

Spacious Parking and a Short Hike

Parking is often difficult in Sedona, AZ but the Yavapai Vista lot is one of the least crowded and the “hike” is a short .5 mile saunter up a slightly uphill trail.

Directions to Yavapai Vista

Hub for many trails and explorations

Many trails stem from this area and give you access to some of Sedona’s best areas, including Cathedral Rock.  Slim Shady Trail and Hiline Trail are some of my favorites and there is plenty of off trail scrambles to explore nearby as well.

How far is the hike to Yavapai Vista?

It is less than 0.3 miles from the trailhead with two slightly rocky sections.  It’s uphill 82ft on the way up and downhill the whole way down.  Be sure to consult a map there are a lot of intersecting trails here.

What gives Yavapai Vista the best views in Sedona?

Views of the classic Sedona rock formations

When you get to the open space that is Yavapai Vista, you have expansive 270 degree views.  Bell Rock, Courthouse Butte, and Chapel of the Holy Cross are all easily visible and photographed from this spot.

Great views any time of day

Few viewpoints in Sedona, AZ offer great views for sunrise and sunset and Yavapai Vista is one of them.  This is also a great location for night photography and one of the few spots I can get good shots in the middle of the day.

Find Sunrise and Sunset times for Sedona

Lots of space to find solitude

I love the fact that this viewpoint is that there is plenty of space to find your own spot and enjoy some solitude.  It should be noted though, that every Tuesday an ecstatic dance session is hosted here and full moon nights feature the drum circle.

How to get great photos at Yavapai Vista

Capture the perfect lighting

Lighting is the most critical factor in great photos.  First, the timing here is a bit tricky as the sun sets an hour or so earlier from this location.  It’s important to use off camera flash lighting to bring out the best in you and the stunning backdrop of this vista.  By capturing the light and balancing it correctly, this spot has some of the most stunning backdrops in Sedona.

Hire a professional photographer

There are many great photographers in Sedona, such as Zach Rohe Photography.  By hiring a professional you can be assured you are choosing the best time and location while getting fun poses and having a complete experience you will always remember.

Assuming a small ceremony, there are plenty of great backdrops at this vista and there are fabulous photo opportunities all around fr romantics afterwards.  There is also a highly spiritual feel to this location as you often get the feeling that ceremonies have been performed here for thousands of years.

Best Trail in Sedona – The Hangover Loop

Don’t spoil the secret of the Hangover Trail

I don’t know if I should be telling anyone this, but the best trail in Sedona requires a hangover. The first time I hiked this trail was with my buddy Diego. He had heard it was awesome and after some late night partying the evening before, we decided to do this one in the morning. We figured it was probably pretty chill and flat: a good hike to do hungover. While the first part is in the shade and was nice for preserving electrolytes, we started climbing up the slick rock valley quickly. This wasn’t what we planned on.

Yet as we climbed, the views became bigger and better. We kept climbing and when we were about to give up an older gentleman crossed our path on the trail and told us we weren’t done yet: the trail was an 8 mile loop. While it was way more than we had planned, we finished it that day. The man was an experienced local hiker from Sedona and he said this was one of the three best trails in the area. By the end of the day, we agreed with him and would later set out to hike the two others he suggested!

How Difficult is the Trail?

The entire loop is a little over 8 miles and features over 1,000 feet of elevation gain. Normally a trail with those stats would be rated as moderate in my “hiking scale” but the Hangover section of the trail is exposed to great heights and has areas where you may have to use your hands and scramble or slide down the slick rock. Walking the trail, I never felt like any of the sections were dangerous, but there are definitely some sections where you have to slow down and be careful. Mountain biking this trail is a whole different enchilada and I have a lot of respect for the folks that ride this trail on their bike.

Why is this the best trail?

For me, it is the big, bold views. And the fact that you are constantly esposed to views in different directions. I suggest you do the loop in a counterclockwise direction, and when you get to the top of Munds Wagon Trail and walk along the Cowpie Trail it feels like you are walking on Mars. There are big views down the road and a huge section of red slick rock with volcanic black rocks strewn everywhere.

As you progress you get higher and higher until you reach the first saddle. Here the views open up to the north west in a completely different direction and you can see the famous Midgley Bridge, Wilson Mountain, and well up to Oak Creek Canyon. The site is amazing and here you connect with the difficult Hangover trail. The rock is reminiscent of Zion national park and it is shaded throughout, so a bit cooler than the rest of the hike. Some small seasonal freshwater springs flow out of the rock here but none of the sources are large enough to drink.

As you walk around the last bit of the shaded area, you emerge into the sunlight and now views facing to the south and Snoopy Rock. Here you descend down a large face of slick rock that isnt dangerous but may involve some “butt scooting” to get down. Take your time and enjoy the views! Soon you will be back on the Munds Wagon trail and heading back to the trailhead.

I love all the scenery, the great spots to stop and enjoy a snack, and the challenge of navigating a bit more than a casual walking trail. The mixture of sun and shade and the spots where you see water and volcanic rocks make it really unique for a hike in the desert. Finally, it’s usually easy to find parking here and you don’t see many people on the trail. Consider yourself lucky for getting an insider secret: this trail provides solitude and majesty all in one!

What else do I need to know?

Definitely bring water, snacks, and some layers. It’s cool in the shade and hot in the sun. The trail’s beginning is not that fun: the Munds Wagon trail is a bit boring and you’ll be hearing traffic from the constant flow of jeeps on the road. But get past this part and you lose the crowds and get all the views. Be careful, but don’t lose your sense of adventure. Relax, explore, and tell me what you think… maybe I’ll see you on the trail!

Two of my favorite places to do portrait, wedding, and family photo shoots are close to this trail.  The first is Merry Go Round rock, which requires a jeep drive or a good sized hike to get to.  The second is right at the trailhead itself, which requres no walking at all.

Airport Mesa Loop Trail – A Sedona Classic

Airport Mesa Loop Trail – A Sedona Classic

Airport Mesa Loop Trail – A Sedona Classic

A loop trail where you see all sides of Sedona

One of my favorite hikes in Sedona is the Airport Mesa loop trail, it has some of the best views in the area on a relatively short hike. You will see plenty of people on this trail, but mostly around the parking area, once you get away from that, it is a trail that provides panoramic views of the entirety of Sedona on terrain that anyone can tackle.

              • Some of the best views in Sedona are from the Airport loop.
              • You get to see all of the most famous Sedona landmarks.
              • Experience the positive energy at Airport Vortex.
              • Plenty of options for different side trails and parking locations.
              • An abundance of wildflowers, birds, and different rocks along the route.
              • Can be a busy trail with noise from planes and helicopters.
              • Rocky and exposed at certain points adds a challenge factor.

Where to start

The most common start to this trail is at the small parking area about ¼ mile up Airport Road, where there is room for about 10 cars to park. From here, a short walk will take you to the beginning of the loop trail and also a small spur up to the top of the Airport vortex. The trail to the top of the vortex is short but steep and has a wire handrail to help you get to the top. Once you are up top, soak in the positive vortex energy while you meditate, do a yoga pose, or just soak in the 360 degree views. After this short detour trail, you can start the loop around the airport, I like to do it in a counter clockwise rotation, but it’s scenic anyway you hike it!

1672201743353041 2
1672201752805550 0

Usually, this first parking lot will be full, and if it is you have two options. First option is to go to the top of Airport Road where on the left there is a small parking lot that requires a small fee. Or you can take my favorite option and park at Sunset Park, a few streets down off of Sunset Drive and then take the aptly named sunset trail to start the airport loop. This will add a little distance and elevation gain to your hike, and the park has plenty of good parking, a bathroom and water station as well.

What is the hike like?

Once you are on the loop, you will see the many famous rock formations of Sedona at different stages of your hike. In the beginning you will get great views of Thunder Mountain and Soldier’s Pass. Midway through the hike you will see expansive views of Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, Courthouse Butte, and Oak Creek as it winds through Sedona. There always seem to be some sort of flowers in bloom at points in this hike, and in the winter you can often even see a few patches of snow. Many birds will fly around and overhead, and occasionally you’ll hear the loud roar of a plane as it takes off or lands at the airport. There are several trails that spur off from the Airport loop as well, one of my favorites is the Tabletop trail which goes over a ridge with expansive 360 degree views.

1672201732809172 4

It should be noted that the Airport loop is a fairly easy trail but it is quite rocky at some points and has a few spots that are slightly exposed, testing your fear of heights. The trail is a little over 3 miles long if you just count the loop and has about 400 feet of elevation gain. If the airport is busy, it can be a bit loud with helicopters and planes taking off, but some may find this interesting as well. Parking and crowds can be a small hassle but there is plenty of solitude once you get away from the road and numerous parking spots give you some flexibility on busy weekends.

If you choose to do this hike, be sure to carry plenty of water and leave no trace! Dogs are allowed on the trail but please pick up after them and take the bags with you, I have picked up a lot of poop bags from irresponsible dog owners. If you see trash, please pick it up and recycle it to spread some good karma and keep Sedona beautiful, there’s even a recycling center near Sunset park.

But most importantly, enjoy the trail, the views, and the energy that makes Sedona such a unique and intriguing destination. Hope to see you on the trail!

Best Sunset View in Sedona – Cathedral Rock

A challenge that is worth the effort and preparation

How to get to the top

The Cathedral Rock trail is more of a scramble, it’s just over .6 miles long but over 700 feet of elevation gain along that distance. At points along the trail you will have to use your hands and careful foot placement to scramble up the slick red rocks and upwards towards your destination. The work to get there makes this trek a lot of fun, but it’s the reward at the top that is what we work for. The westward facing views provide some of the best sunsets you can find in Sedona.

About halfway up is the toughest scramble up along a crack in the sandstone. There is only one way up and down here, so be patient as it can get bottlenecked and crowded here. While the climbing here requires hands, feet, and technique, there is minimal exposure: meaning if you slipped or fell you would only drop a few feet at most. Take your time, and you’ll be rewarded with views like these about halfway up:

broad view from cathedral rock

This is a good spot to take a breather and take in the views to the south and the east. Take your time and observe the gargantuan, twisted juniper trees, the different types of cactus, and whatever flowers are in bloom. Some say this area is a powerful energetic vortex. I personally feel tons of energy from the amazing vistas, natural beauty, and magnetic red rocks. There are many side trails in this area and most lead to some really interesting and secluded spots. Be careful and know that the main trail always leads UP!

Check out Alltrails Cathedral Rock guide for a downloadable map of the hike.

As far as I know, It’s near impossible to get to the true summit of Cathedral Rock. When the trail ends, you actually are at the saddle, and you will likely be joined by a lot of other people. This is a popular hike, but if you carefully walk to the south, you will discover a few trails that lead to two much more secluded saddles where you can capture great photos and enjoy the sunset away from the crowds.

At the top, the views are awe-inspiring

Some of my best photos and most memorable evenings have been spent up here. When a friend comes in from out of town, this is the sunset hike I want to take them on. I think the hard work in climbing to the top releases some major energy within your body and soul and the reward is a beautiful cosmic experience, whether you believe it or not.

Check out some of my photos of Cathedral Rock and Arizona

VERTICAL CATHEDRAL SUNSET PHONE

There are more challenges here than just the climb. It can be crowded, and Thursday-Sunday require a shuttle to get to the trailhead as Sedona shuts down the parking area. It usually reopens in the evening so if you’re going for sunset you can park at the trailhead, but I have found the scheduling of all of this to be inconsistent. The latest info on the trailhead and shuttles can be found here.

All hikes in the desert require lots of water and layers of clothing. You will be hot in the sun, working your way up but you will be chilly in the shade up top and on the trek down. Another factor to consider is coming down in the dark. Bring a headlamp and take your time. This is where the downloadable map from Alltrails can really help or use a tracker for your route on the way up. There are many side trails and it can be confusing!

Have a great journey to the top and be sure to take pictures and enjoy the view! Let me know if you have any questions below, and if you want some professional pictures taken of you in Sedona, shoot me a message. I also have great wall art photos for sale on my website of Cathedral Rock and many other scenic locations.
